Furloin
Thimblequick
created by John Kell
The most memorable experience for Furloin was when he
and a group of stalwart adventures began to explore the Citadal of
Thunder and his curiousity got the better of him.
After a long and hard battle with some knights of Thunder, Furloin of
course was rooting for his team as he levitated to the top of the room
to a crystal sphere that rotated and let off a dazzling display blinking
multi-colored lights within the immense room. (Disco Ball) his only
thoughts, except those saved for the success of his party, was that it
must be valuable to somebody else it wouldn't be there. So there had to
be away to get it down. After a fumbling with it for a few seconds,
Furloin found the release level and flipped it...ok, ok, he didn't know
what that switch did but knew it couldn't hurt to find out. So the
globe, some 6' in diameter, dropped near a hundred feet to plunge into
the last remaining knight and mount who were about to rip apart the
cleric of the party.
When the ball exploded, Furloin saw that several things were hidden
inside. A gem the size of his fist, two rings, and, of all things, some
technological item that made a loud noise and a small hole went it went
off as it hit the ground.
Saving the day, Furloin believed he should have first pick so after
pocketing one of the rings, he picked up the rest of the items and let
the party choose what they wanted, of course it was real nice of the
elven mage to give him the pretty gem, he didn't even have to ask!
That evening, holed up safely in a small room so that nothing could make
their way in, Furloin tried on the ring he pocketed and slipped it on.
The next thing he new was that he was now the last ninja assassin and
his final mission was to assassinate the entire party!
He knew he couldn't get away with it right now so he waited and plotted.
There were 5 of them so he knew he had to narrow the odds.
The first to go was the mage, Furloin detected a trap inside one of the
rooms and kept it to himself. A Pack of Moon Dogs was set upon them and
while everybody entered the fray the mage backed himself towards the
trap to prepare for the fight. Furloin saw that he was just on the edge
so while everybody was fighting for their lives, he turned invisible and
tripped the mage into the trap. Suddenly the mage screamed as he plunged
20' into a vat of bubbling acid, all the while poor Furloin was bent
over trying to save him. One of the fighters had turned at the screams
giving a dog an opening which ripped out his throat.
In the end the party asked what happened and Furloin said he tried to
help but couldn't manage to pull the mage to safety.
The next death happened the next night. That day he had found a sealed
vial containing what he thought of as poison for it was to be broken and
injected into his hand should he fail deactivating the trapped chest. SO
good was his skill that the remaining party members did not see him
pocket the vial, of course it helped that it was now invisible as well.
So that night, as everybody began to look through what they uncovered in
that chest, Furloin coated a bandage with it while nobody looked on. The
mercenary who joined them was an untrusting sort, and didn't care much
for the cleric, though he respected the man. The cleric was spent of
mana so had to rely on bandages and normal first aid to aid in his
healing until the following morning when he regained back his blessed
mana. The mercenary helped the priest change his bandage, replacing it
with the one covered in the liquid. Almost immediately the cleric began
to shake violently. The party feared he was to explode and jumped on him
to hold him down. The priest shook so hard that his teeth began to break
and his elbow shattered, then it was still and silent, the priest had
died.
Furloin played on the suspicions of the two remaining men, that the
mercenary aided him last and it is possible he did him in to get a
bigger share. Furloin also said that the may have been poisoned from
battle and just now acting up. With both men shaken and disturbed by the
recent deaths of what was once a well-made party, they and Furloin
decided to head back into town the next day.
The last two ended up dead at each other's hands. Furloin played their
doubts to the point that the mercenary was no longer trusted and when he
accidentally fumbled his weapon towards Furloin, cutting off his hand
and causing him to black out, the fight ensued with the leader wounding
the Gray Horror severely but not killing it, then turning his blade on
the mercenary who was bent over to gather his weapon and check on
Furloin's condition. The merc didn't stand a chance and was pierced
through the lungs, a mortal wound.
The leader, however, had ignored the Gray Horror and it had crept up on
him and slashed the leader across the back as well, not a mortal wound,
but nearly crippling him for life. The leader turned on him and finished
the creature off with a single stroke to the head.
It was then that the mortally wounded mercenary plunged his own sword
into the neck of the leader, causing them to both fall. Both dead from
each other's hands.
Furloin was unconscious the whole time and two days later, his hand a
pink stubble on the end of his arm, and half starved, was saved by
another adventurous group who tended his wounds and allowed him to
follow along. his hand with the ring on it was never found, though he
suspects it lay under the rotting corpse of the gray horror. When asked
what happened he shrugs and doesn't know, having no memory of these
recent events. He only knows that a lot of good people had died and once
again the fates found him worthy enough to carry on.
Furloin did go on and is now one of the richest people in all of Arduin.
A Merchant trader who deals in the exotic, Furloin still travels to far
and away places in search of that one place that will make him the
richest person in all the world!
