Hammer of Ter H'Drachen
 by Dave Hargrave

A centuries-old magikal device/weapon of black oak and rough meteoric iron, as black as night itself. 39” long from head to shaft end; a hefty weight of 12 pounds. It is said to have come form some other Multiverse (rumor has it it is from Tual Fey or Mirrorlight), carried in the hands of an avenging Dwarven King seeking the Balrog who had slain his entire clan. It is known to have been retrieved from the 9th lower level of infamous Skull Tower by a minion of Lord Elric of Dragon Keep some 25 years past. This warrior was the sole survivor of a band of eight doughty adventurers who had dared the stygian depths of that foul place. He would say little beyond the fact that a Balrog had been slain and an angry spirit laid to rest.

Three times since then Balrogs have appeared to bedevil the local peasants, and three times one of Elric’s retinue went forth carrying the weapon and slew the dread creatures. The fourth time a Balrog appeared, the man who had originally retrieved it came out of retirement to wield the weapon since, in his words, “Twas my bringing to light this hammer, thus twas my bringing to light also these foul Balrogs.” None could gainsay him, so he went to do battle in dark and mysterious Bonewood where the evil thing had taken up its residence. None saw the hammer or Balrog again and its whereabouts are now unknown.

The weapon is +4/+4 except vs Balrogs when its +8 to hit, +D20 to damage. It has neither Intelligence nor Ego but is of the strongest Lawful alignment. Those not of that ilk feel nauseous and faint if they touch it and pass out if they lift it. Those of Chaos have a Fear reaction if they approach within 5’ of it and pass out if it is placed in their hands. If it’s near a Balrog or it’s kin (up to 120’ regardless of obstruction), the iron hammer head begins to glow with heat and to spark and give off flames (like a meteorite entering the atmosphere) and that heat, unearthly in origin, DOES burn the Balrogs it hits (D10 Flame/Heat damage). So the unnamed hammer was called after he who first wielded it. Some say the hammer has been seen in Engrand or Tharkalla, and some say it now resides upon the 12th plane of Hell. The only certain thing is that it is truly the Bane of all Balrogs and their kind have sworn to destroy it and whoever wields it.
